DermWorld Academy Insider: A crash course on the Academy’s Advisory Board
April 15, 2024

The Advisory Boards of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and the AAD Association give members the opportunity to recommend actions by the organizations that, if approved by the Advisory Board, must be considered by the Board of Directors — creating a path for direct member action on topics of concern.
In this exclusive DermWorld Academy Insider interview, Amy J. Derick, MD, FAAD, who became Advisory Board Chair on March 12, 2024, explains the Advisory Board’s role and how and why Academy members should engage with it.
DermWorld: What is the role of the Advisory Board in the Academy?
Dr. Derick: The Academy’s Advisory Board provides a forum for members to present policy proposals for consideration by the Board of Directors. It serves as a conduit of information between the Advisory Board, the represented societies, and the Board of Directors, and disseminates information on Academy policies and other issues vital to members’ patients and practices.
DermWorld: What is a resolution?
Dr. Derick: Resolutions are recommendations regarding issues that may impact the specialty and our patients. They often encourage the Academy to take further action.
Members are strongly encouraged to work with their dermatologic societies to bring resolutions forward for consideration. The Academy’s Advisory Board invites all Academy members, as well as state, local, and regional dermatology groups, to submit proposed policy resolutions on important issues in dermatology practice and regulations.
DermWorld: How can a member get involved with the Advisory Board?
Dr. Derick: Join a constituent society of the Academy, such as a state, regional, or local dermatology society. Each constituent society can identify a representative and an alternate representative to serve on the Advisory Board. The representatives must be Fellows in good standing with the Academy and members of the constituent society.
DermWorld: Why should they?
Dr. Derick: You have the opportunity to act as a liaison between the AAD and the dermatology society you represent, with a mission to protect, promote, and preserve the interests of the individual practitioner of dermatology.
