Professionalism and Ethics
Ethics and medicine have been intertwined since the dawn of our profession. From the ancient Hippocratic Oath to the principle of primum non nocere to modern-day principlism, medical ethics have evolved over time.
As public and professional interest in medical ethics increases, it is important for clinicians, researchers, and educators to maintain a clear and consistent understanding of the ethical principles underlying the practice of medicine in the twenty-first century.
There are many valid ways to consider ethical issues and to elevate the profile of ethical decision-making without forcing dermatologists into a single way of approaching medical ethics.
As such, the Academy has a five-part statement which was ratified by the AAD Board of Directors. The statement sets the basic framework for an ethical practice; it is not designed to set unattainable or unrealistic standards. As such, it is hoped that AAD members will strive to adhere to this statement as an acceptable standard of conduct. The statement symbolizes our commitment to ethical practice; not only to each other, but also to colleagues in other fields and the public at large.
The Ethics Statement
In acting as a dermatologist, I will strive to:
Put my patients’ welfare above other interests;
Provide care that adheres to professional standards of practice;
Provide care for those in need;
Foster collegiality, through my interaction with the medical community; and
Support diversity, equity, and inclusion.
