DermWorld Academy Insider: JAAD Case Reports editor

Nov. 20, 2023

Headshot of Brett Sloan, MD FAAD

JAAD Case Reports, a companion publication of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology supporting the advancement of clinical dermatology practice, is searching for a new editor.

In this exclusive interview, DermWorld Academy Insider spoke with current JAAD Case Reports editor, Brett Sloan, MD, FAAD, about what initially drew him to the position and why he believes other members should apply.

DermWorld: What drew you to apply for the position originally?

Dr. Sloan: I had been reviewing manuscripts for multiple dermatology journals since I was a chief resident many years ago. I felt privileged to review manuscripts and found gratification reading what other dermatologists were seeing and doing around the world prior to publication. I am somewhat of an introvert, and I enjoy sitting at home and reading after work and on weekends. I wanted to get more involved in academics, and the Academy and this position seemed like an ideal fit.

DermWorld: What have been some of your favorite parts of serving in this role?

Dr. Sloan: Definitely all the talented people I have had the opportunity to work with. As a new editor, the entire JAAD staff worked closely and patiently with me as I learned how to navigate my new role. I exponentially expanded my “circle of friends” by working closely with my editorial staff and the board, as well as with reviewers and authors.

DermWorld: What qualities make for a good JAAD Case Reports editor?

Dr. Sloan:

  1. Someone who enjoys reading and is well versed in grammar. There is a seeming endless array of new manuscripts, revised manuscripts, and final proofs. Prior to becoming editor, I read most major dermatology journals and periodicals cover to cover. Because of time constraints, I admittedly have been reading more abstracts than full manuscripts lately.

  2. Someone who works well in a team. As the journal received more submissions, our editorial staff and board have expanded. The JAAD and Elsevier teams meet monthly and annually at the Academy meeting to discuss the status of the journal and strategic planning.

  3. Someone who respects deadlines while maintaining an eye for detail. They must respect the authors’ desire to get their work published in a timely manner. While a good editor wants everyone to succeed and respects the work of all authors, they must be decisive and aware of unconscious biases.

DermWorld: Why should members apply for this position?

Dr. Sloan: That is a tough question. This job is not suited for everyone, as it takes considerable time and effort. It is, however, immensely rewarding allowing one to stay attuned to rare skin conditions and novel therapeutics and procedures while working closely with an amazing team. This job will immensely expand your breadth of knowledge, improve your writing and communication skills, and cultivate relationships with dermatologists around the globe.
