DermWorld Academy Insider: New JAAD hidradenitis suppurativa supplement offers latest updates

Headshots of Jennifer Hsiao, MD, FAAD, and Christopher J. Sayed, MD, FAAD

Dec. 26, 2024

The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) recently published a new supplement, “Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Embracing Progress.” In the supplement, dermatologists can get the latest updates on what has been described as “the worst disease in dermatology.” You’ll learn about comorbidities, the results of epidemiologic studies, updates on pathophysiology, what’s in store for the future, and more, to help you feel confident that you’re providing your patients with the most up-to-date information and optimal care.

Members of the AAD can access this supplement for free through their JAAD subscription and earn up to 11 hours of continuing medical education credit for completing a post-test and evaluation survey.

In this exclusive DermWorld Academy Insider interview, Jennifer Hsiao, MD, FAAD, and Christopher J. Sayed, MD, FAAD, co-editors of the supplement, explain the new HS supplement and why Academy members should read it.

DermWorld: Why was this supplement developed? Why the title “Embracing Progress?”

Dr. Hsiao and Dr. Sayed: There has been tremendous progress in the field of hidradenitis suppurativa in the past decade. Our goal for this supplement is to arm clinicians with an updated, practical guide to optimizing management of HS and to summarize the advances being made in understanding HS pathogenesis. We titled the supplement “Embracing Progress” to reflect our excitement for the positive changes in this field and our expectation that our dermatology colleagues will embrace these changes and implement them into their HS patient care.

DermWorld: What can members expect to learn from the supplement?

Dr. Hsiao and Dr. Sayed: The supplement provides succinct content on a variety of important HS topics, from our current understanding of HS pathogenesis, to comorbidities, to management strategies for HS. The emphasis of the supplement is on management of HS, including medical treatments such as biologics and small molecule inhibitors, antibiotics, hormonal and metabolic modulators, as well as procedural therapies such as surgery and laser.

DermWorld: Why should members read the supplement and take the corresponding quiz?

Dr. Hsiao and Dr. Sayed: We designed the supplement as a reader-friendly guide to current HS management, which is particularly timely given that the numerous updates in the field of HS since the 2019 North American guidelines for HS were published. While the number of HS specialists has increased, it is still far outpaced by the volume of patients needing appropriate care. We hope this supplement provides all dermatologists with the confidence to take charge of the management of HS patients and provide the kind of expert care that makes us all proud to be part of the dermatology community.
