DermWorld Academy Insider: New JAAD Reviews journal seeks submissions

April 9, 2024

Headshot for Shari Lipner, MD, PhD, FAAD

The newest member of the JAAD journals family, JAAD Reviews, has launched. JAAD Reviews seeks high quality, evidence-based reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses papers.

In this DermWorld Academy Insider exclusive interview, Shari Lipner, MD, PhD, FAAD, the recently appointed Founding Editor of JAAD Reviews, explains the submission process, why the publication was created, and why she sought the role of editor.

DermWorld: Why was it necessary to develop JAAD Reviews?

Dr. Lipner: The JAAD journals family recognized a distinct need for high quality reviews on dermatologic topics, and therefore, the AAD approved the creation of a reviews-specific journal to publish high-impact review articles. There is a strong demand both within and outside the AAD for the comprehensive information contained within a topic-based review article.

DermWorld: Why did you seek out the role of JAAD Reviews Founding Editor?

Dr. Lipner: I have had extensive editorial experience and have enjoyed every minute of it. I serve on editorial boards for Cutis, Dermatology Practical and Conceptual, and JAAD, and previously served as dermatology section editor for Annals of Medicine. I am also the editor of several textbooks and books series, including Scher and Daniel’s Nails: Diagnosis, Surgery, Therapy, 5th edition; Cosmetics: Controlled Efficacy Studies and Regulation; Updates in Clinical Dermatology; and the issue of Dermatologic Clinics entitled “Nail Disorders: Diagnosis and Management.” I am passionate about dermatology, having authored over 400 PubMed indexed papers.

I was also the VisualDx nail editor, where I developed and edited the nail disease content and helped to curate representative images for nail conditions, including a broad range of skin types. I also edited the dermatology content for Dynamed, which provides up-to-date evidence-based information to physicians of different specialties.

I also served for many years on Dialogues in Dermatology and was the chair of the AAD Public Education Committee, where I was responsible for editing print and web-based content.

There is a need for a journal that focuses solely on clinical reviews to help guide dermatologists in caring for their patients, and I am honored to lead this effort.

DermWorld: Why might members want to submit articles for JAAD Reviews?

Dr. Lipner: JAAD Reviews provides up-to-date clinical information to AAD members and dermatologists globally. Since it is an open access journal, it offers a much wider distribution of a member’s article than in a typical subscription-based journal. While there will ultimately be a fee charged in order to publish in JAAD Reviews, we are offering to waive that fee for the rest of 2024, so now is the perfect time to submit your high-quality review paper.

DermWorld: What is the submission process?

Dr. Lipner: Members who are interested in submitting should first read the Author Guide to determine article type requirements, and then when the paper is ready for submission, they should submit through the JAAD Reviews Editorial Manager system. Please allow up to 4-6 weeks for an initial decision.
