Who owns dermatology?

The face of dermatology is changing. As more and more dermatologists move toward group practice, outside investors have taken note. While a majority of dermatology practices are independently owned, according to the AAD’s 2016 Group Practice survey, a steadily growing percentage are affiliated with a larger organization or backed by private equity (see cover story). Unsurprisingly, survey data indicates that the larger a practice is, the less likely it is to be independently owned. This trend is more pronounced among multispecialty practices, with corporate entities owning slightly more than half.
