The Academy recently learned with sorrow of the passing of the following members of the dermatologic community.
JON GARRY BEIDLER, MD, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Dec. 30, 2018, at age 82. Trained in dermatology at University of Pennsylvania and practiced in Chambersburg for 30 years. Loved music, trivia, and Scrabble.
THOMAS ONG CHUA, MD, of Aurora, Illinois, Oct. 16, 2018, at age 77. Trained in dermatology at Northwestern University.
THEODORE A. DANN, MD, of Fair Oaks, California, Aug. 21, 2017, at age 87. Trained in dermatology at National Capital Area Consortium Dermatology Resident Program.
KENNETH J. DEMPSEY, MD, of Sikeston, Missouri, Nov. 28, 2012, at age 84. Dermatology training at Medical College of Wisconsin.
LOREN E. GOLITZ, MD, of Denver, March 8, 2019, at age 77. Trained in dermatology at Columbia University followed by a dermpath fellowship at AFIP. Became professor of dermatology and Pathology at University of Colorado Medical School and chief of dermatology at Denver Health Medical Center. Respected and admired teacher of residents and students and of 69 dermpath fellows. Held many leadership roles in dermatology organizations including the AAD, American Academy of Dermpath., Amer. Society of Pediatric Derm., and the Amer. Board of Derm. and published widely. Received Founders Award from Amer. Soc. of Dermpath. Was a pilot, mountain climber of 14,000-foot mountains, and enjoyed hiking, backpacking, and skiing. Loyal fan of Denver Broncos and University of Missouri Tigers.
JOHN E. LEDONNE, MD, of Lunenburg, Massachusetts, Feb. 28, 2018, at age 95. Trained in dermatology at Harvard. Practiced in Fitchburg and was an avid golfer.
LAWRENCE HARVEY LEIMAN, MD, of Encino, California, Aug. 4, 2018, at age 82.
ARNE S. LEVINSON, MD, of Westport, Connecticut. Trained in dermatology at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
THOMAS MEHREL, MD, of Miami Beach, Florida, Feb. 11, 2019, at age 63. Trained in dermatology at NYU Med. Center. Practiced in Miami Beach for more than 20 years.
DONALD CHARLES NUWER, MD, of Williamsville, New York, July 27, 2017, at age 92. Trained in dermatology at University of Buffalo.
THOMAS MICHAEL O’NEILL, MD, of Overland Park, Kansas, July 15, 2016, at age 77. Trained in dermatology at University of VA Medical Center. Practiced in Reston, Virginia.
YOLANDA ORTIZ, MD, of Mexico City, Jan. 15, 2019, at age 85.
ARNOLD L. SCHROETER, MD, of Rochester, Minnesota, Feb. 14, 2019, at age 83. Trained in dermatology at Mayo Clinic after a Public Health Service fellowship at CDC. Spent 16 years on staff at Mayo Clinic, then moved to Wright State Medical School in Dayton, Ohio as chair of dermatology. Returned to Mayo in 1994 as chair in dermatology until retiring in 2008. Was a teacher and researcher. Loved wood-working, was an accomplished photographer, and built his own family cabin in Outing, Minnesota.
MARCY L. STREET, MD, of Okemos, Michigan, March 22, 2019, at age 59. Trained in dermatology at Mayo Clinic and completed a Mohs surgery fellowship at University of Wisconsin with Dr. Mohs. Became first female African-American fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon. Founded her practice in Okemos. Enjoyed travel, scuba diving, meditating in her garden, kayaking, biking, dancing and jazz, and R&B music.
WALLACE STUART, MD, of St. Louis, Feb. 27, 2018, at age 83. Trained in dermatology at Washington University School of Medicine. Practiced in the St. Louis area for more than 35 years.
JESSE RAYMOND THOMAS III, MD, of Carrollton, Texas, Jan. 12, 2019, at age 68. Trained in dermatology at Mayo Clinic. Practiced in Plano and Sherman, Texas for 33 years. Believing everyone is entitled to good medical care, he treated anyone in need. Served on board of trustees of Austin College, his alma mater, in Sherman, Texas.
EVELYN E. VANDERVEEN, MD, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Oct. 5, 2018, at age 69. Trained in dermatology at University of Michigan.
THELMA GOLUB WARSHAW, MD, of Maplewood, New Jersey, May 26, 2018, at age 94. Trained in dermatology at NYU and practiced in Westfield, New Jersey for 58 years. On a personal note, Dr. Warshaw helped me get my own practice off the ground in 1975 by sending me her patient overflow.
