Which states participate in the IMLC?
Facts at your Fingertips
By Emily Margosian, Assistant Editor, December 1, 2022
For the past decade, telemedicine has broadened access to patients in rural and underserved areas. With the onset of COVID-19, CMS temporarily waived the requirement that physicians need to be licensed in the state where the patient they are treating is located. This evolving landscape has brought renewed focus to the topic of universal medical licensure and the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC).
The IMLC is an agreement between state boards of allopathic and osteopathic medicine that allows board-certified physicians in one of the member states to obtain expedited licensure in other member states. According to the American Medical Association, use of the IMLC grew by 47% during COVID-19, with more than 8,000 licenses issued through the compact from March 2020 through March 2021. To date, more than half of U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the Territory of Guam are now participating in the IMLC.
