Spotlight on dermatology demographics
Facts at your fingertips
By Emily Margosian, Assistant Editor, February 1, 2022
Every year, the AAD collects a snapshot of official membership data, giving insight into wider specialty trends. The Academy represents 91% of practicing board-certified dermatologists, with an overall membership of 20,648. According to AAD survey data, in 2021, U.S. AAD members worked in all 50 states and territories. Dermatologist distribution was highest in the most populous states, states with larger elderly populations, and those in the Sun Belt Region.
Per current trends seen across many specialties, data also showed that women continue to join the dermatology profession at higher rates than men. Among practicing AAD members, more than half (56%) of dermatologists reported working in a practice that is owned by dermatologists, with dermatology groups remaining the dominant practice setting. Comparison to past membership data showed that solo practice rates declined slightly while academic practice grew, with younger dermatologists more likely to practice in group or academic settings.
