Congress must pass a permanent Medicare physician payment update that acknowledges the inflationary growth of health care costs while working toward long-term reform, AADA President Seemal R. Desai, MD, FAAD, told members of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health when he gave his testimony on May 23. The AADA provided testimony to the House Subcommittee on Medicare physician payment reform and the negative impact that the current payment structure places on private practices. The AADA continues to fight for Medicare physician payment reform as its sole federal congressional advocacy priority.

During the hearing, members of the subcommittee asked experts on medical private practice about the burdens and issues they face in meeting patient needs in today’s health care environment. Specifically, Dr. Desai implored Congress to reform the Medicare physician payment system by establishing a positive annual inflation adjustment and eliminating budget neutrality requirements to the physician payment system.
