Digging into dermatologist demographics
Facts at your Fingertips
By Emily Margosian, Assistant Editor, June 1, 2025
Each year, the Academy releases a snapshot of official membership facts and figures. In 2025, AAD total membership includes 21,400+ dermatologists, representing 96.3% of U.S. American Board of Dermatology-certified dermatologists.
AAD dermatologists work in all 50 states and all territories, with 17,800+ U.S. members. Counts are highest in the most populous states, states with larger elderly populations, and those in the Sun Belt region. Women continue to join the dermatology profession at higher rates than men. In 2025, 56% of practicing U.S. members are women, up from 55% the previous year.
Dermatology groups remain the dominant form of practice in dermatology. Academic practice overtook solo for second place (behind dermatology groups) in 2023, with the gap between the two widening in 2024. From recent surveying, more than half of dermatologists (54%) report working in a dermatology-owned practice, 22% in a hospital or health care system, and 13% in a private equity-backed practice.
