Scope of Practice
AADA opposes pharmacist scope expansion
Over the past month, the AADA joined the American Medical Association and other specialty and state societies to oppose H.R. 3164/ S. 2426 (PDFs), the Ensuring Community Access to Pharmacist Services Act.
This legislation would inappropriately allow pharmacists to perform services that would normally only be authorized and covered if conducted by a physician, including testing and treating patients for certain illnesses. It would allow pharmacists to be eligible for Medicare reimbursement for testing and treatment of COVID-19, influenza, RSV, or streptococcal pharyngitis.
In addition to fighting scope creep, it was vitally important for the AADA to oppose this bill because adding these covered services would expand Medicare payment for pharmacists, which could mean less Medicare reimbursement for physicians.
