Common modifiers

Modifiers are two-character numeric, alphanumeric, and alphabetical codes that when appended to the CPT codeTM, provide additional detail to the story of the encounter or service. There are modifiers that explain that the service or procedure was increased or reduced, provided as an adjunctive service, or was provided more than once during the encounter. Omitting modifiers when needed, can result in claim denials or delay in reimbursement due to claim correction and refiling.
Keeping a list of the modifiers you will use most often and knowing when and how to apply each will reduce denials related to common modifier claim errors.
