Skin biopsy codes
Dermatologists must code skin biopsies with one of six codes — three primary and three add on — which are specific about the technique and depth of the biopsy performed. However, there are rules for reporting multiple skin biopsies during the same encounter.
Site specific codes, such as biopsy of the nail plate (11755), lip mucosa (40490), tongue (41100, 41105, 41108), or external ear (69100) are can be reported using any method to obtain the tissue sample.
Use our interactive tool below to familiarize yourself with the new codes and download our handy reference tool (PDF).
You can test your knowledge of surgical and procedural coding by taking short Academy quizzes, or see coding quizzes on other subjects.
