NP/PA laws
Non-physician clinicians (NPCs) are increasingly being incorporated into dermatology practices nationwide. Each state has its own scope-of-practice laws governing what a non-physician clinician is allowed to treat and whether supervision is required. The Academy supports appropriate safeguards to ensure patient safety and a focus on the highest quality care as this workforce expands. It is the Academy's position (PDF) that non-physician clinicians cannot appropriately provide care in independent dermatology practice.
If you have an issue of concern regarding truth-in-advertising and/or scope of practice, please use this form to contact the Academy. Academy staff will research the state laws and provide you with resources and recommendations as to how you can take action locally.
