Psoriasis: Appropriate Assessment & Treatment of Severe Psoriasis
DESCRIPTION:
Percentage of patients with a diagnosis of severe psoriasis without a documented Body Surface Area (BSA) or a documented BSA greater than 10% for whom phototherapy or an oral systemic or biologic medication was prescribed.

MEASURE PURPOSE:
To decrease disease severity by appropriately treating the severest of psoriasis patients. By assessing for psoriasis severity regularly and prescribing biologics, systemics, or phototherapy for severe patients (BSA of greater than 10%) this will improve overall disease and make symptoms more manageable.

A. No. This measure can only be reported via a registry, such as DataDerm.
Q. Are patient encounters conducted via telehealth allowable?
A. Yes. Telehealth encounters are allowable.
Q. What is the numerator?
A. Patients with a documented BSA greater than 10% are prescribed phototherapy or an oral systemic or biologic medication. Note, a BSA of exactly 10% is not eligible.
Q. What is the denominator?
A. All patients regardless of age with a diagnosis of psoriasis.
Q. Are there any exceptions for this measure?
A. Yes. If the patient declines treatment with phototherapy or an oral systemic or biologic medication; patient has contraindication(s) to therapy

Calculation
The numerator: Patients with a documented BSA greater than 10% are prescribed phototherapy or an oral systemic or biologic medication.
The denominator: All patients regardless of age with a diagnosis of psoriasis.
Measure calculation example
Dr. Omar saw 150 patients with a diagnosis of psoriasis either without a documented BSA or a documented BSA greater than 10%. The denominator is 150.
Of the 150 patients, Dr. Omar prescribed phototherapy or an oral systemic or biologic medication 69 times. This is the numerator.
Quality of patient care = 69/150. Dr. Omar has a score of 46% for this measure. This translates to 8 to 8.9 points.
Important note
Physicians who achieve a 56.25% score and above receive 10 points. Clinicians score 3 points even if they report on only one patient. This is applicable only to small practices with 15 providers or fewer.
