DermWorld Academy Insider: Delivering dermatology’s message
Aug. 30, 2021
Wondering why there are so many dermatologists who are poised, confident, and on-message when they talk to the press? They may be one of the hundreds of members who have participated in the AAD’s media training courses, which are part of the Academy’s robust public education efforts to position the specialty and increase awareness around ways for the public to keep their skin, hair, and nails healthy. In this DermWorld Academy Insider Exclusive, Laurel Geraghty, MD, FAAD, explains why the courses are important.
DermWorld: What do AAD members get out of media training courses like the one you led at the recent Summer Meeting in Tampa?
Dr. Geraghty: Our media training courses are an opportunity for board-certified dermatologists to learn how to deliver compelling and relatable key messages during media interviews. A lot of us have had the frustrating experience of having a 45-minute interview with a reporter and then one tiny (and sometimes irrelevant) quote ends up getting published or broadcast. These sessions are a great opportunity to learn techniques that help you stay in control of an interview and practice communicating what you most want your audience to remember.
DermWorld: Why should dermatologists want to be active in engaging with the media?
Dr. Geraghty: It’s so important for dermatologists to engage in media opportunities because we simply cannot let non-medical YouTubers, TikTokers, and other social media “influencers” control the message. It is our responsibility as the true experts in skin, hair, and nail care to get accurate information out to the public. I love being part of the opportunity to communicate to people about what’s true, what’s real, and what’s most important for them to know in dermatology.
