Skin in the news
Facts at your Fingertips
By Emily Margosian, content specialist, April 2, 2018
In 2017, the Academy generated more than 8.8 billion media impressions in print and online — akin to reaching each person in the United States more than 26 times. Nevertheless, the year’s overall total marked a slight decrease from last year’s record-setting 8.9 billion. Despite the drop in overall impressions, the most covered topics for the year remained consistent, with acne occupying 45 percent of 2017’s dermatology-media related coverage, and skin cancer accounting for 42 percent.
As dermatology media coverage continues to increasingly shift toward online consumption, the AAD’s social media channels have kept pace; the Academy now has more than 200,000 social media followers across all platforms. See the graphic below for a more detailed breakdown of the expansion of the Academy’s public-facing social media platforms in 2017.
