By Jerry Graff, MD, December 1, 2019
The Academy recently learned with sorrow of the passing of the following members of the dermatologic community.
MARGARET C. DOUGLASS, MD, of Beverly Hills, Michigan, May 29, 2019, at age 75. Trained in dermatology at University of Chicago and practiced in Detroit for more than 49 years.
KEVIN B. KULICK, MD, of Buffalo, New York, Feb. 25, 2019, at age 68. Trained in dermatology at University of Buffalo followed by a year as a Buswell Fellow there — a program for developing physician-scientists. Practiced solo for 25 years, then joined the Buffalo Medical Group. Had a special interest in studying L.E. Served in many leadership roles in the Jewish community of Buffalo. Was an avid gardener and was known for his English-style perennial gardens.
JEROME Z. LITT, MD, of Beachwood, Ohio, Sept. 8, 2019, at age 97. Trained in dermatology at NYU Medical Center. Practiced in NYC, Cleveland, and, mostly, Beachwood, Ohio for 65 years. Taught residents at several Cleveland hospitals. Authored Drug Eruption Reference Manual, now in its 26th edition. Wrote over 100 books on skin for the specialty and for lay people. Lectured around the world, even in Chinese, Russian, and German. Known for his love of music and ability to hum the tunes of a symphony on mention of the title or composer. Performed with the Metropolitan Opera and was even married backstage between Acts I and II while performing in Tosca. Wrote continually about dermatologic “pearls” that live on. A wonderful and touching quote from his wife, Vel, “He lived boldly. He did not ‘pass away’ yesterday evening. He would not have like it said that he ‘passed away.’ He died at home, quietly, in his own bed, enfolded in the arms of his wife, as he wished, while she sang softly to him his favorite song, Dein ist mein ganzes Herz’ (You are my heart’s delight).”
MICHELE PAUPORTE, MD, of New York, Aug. 26, 2019, at age 48. Trained in dermatology followed by a Mohs surgery fellowship at UCSF. Returned to NYC to practice and to be close to her older sister who subsequently died of breast cancer. Started a non-profit with that sister to provide literature to children with parents battling cancer and served on its board. Avid tennis player, skier, and swimmer, and introduced her two children to a love of reading, skiing, and skating.
HAGEN H. TRONNIER, MD, of Witten, Germany. Trained in dermatology at University Hautklinik Tuebingen, Germany. Wrote extensively on beta carotene and lycopene-rich foods and photo-protection.
HANS VAN DEN BROEK, MD, of Buffalo, New York, Nov. 8, 2018, at age 87. Graduated from medical school at Leiden University Medical Faculty in The Netherlands and had post-graduate residency and fellowship training in several U.S. programs.
