We are living in a new golden age for dermatology
From the President
By Terrence A. Cronin Jr., MD, FAAD, April 1, 2023
We’ve been involved at the Academy leadership level for a long time. I’ve served on the AADA Council on Government Affairs and Health Policy; I was a member of the Academy’s Advisory Board Reference Committee and Executive Committee; and most recently I was the chair of the Advisory Board, and on the Academy’s Board of Directors.
My work with the Academy has been one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, experiences of my professional life, and I hope to motivate you all to serve your Academy in a leadership role as well.

Last year, there was no shortage of challenging issues to face as a specialty. We continued to battle another lidocaine shortage, many dangerous scope of practice expansions, and inappropriate administrative hurdles such as prior authorization, to name a few. Finally, we fought against the 8.5% cuts in Medicare payments, reducing them to a 2% cut in 2023 and a 3.25% cut in 2024. A step in the right direction, but absolutely still not acceptable. These challenges persist and we are ready to continue the fight. I pledge to continue the momentum that our past presidents have built and work toward initiatives that increase patient access to our services and secure fair payment for our expert care.
While the Academy has a new leadership team at the helm, rest assured that our focus on your patients and practice is unchanged. I am proud to represent the Academy and look forward to advocating for the concerns and issues impacting dermatologists, the specialty, and our patients. We are the experts, and I plan to continue Academy efforts to ensure that patients, the public, policymakers, and our colleagues in the house of medicine understand the value of board-certified dermatologists. Now…let’s get started.

Presidential spotlight
It takes a dedicated and engaged membership to move the needle on the issues facing our patients and practices, and sometimes our most diligent members can go unrecognized. As a toast to our unsung heroes within the Academy, I will be featuring one hardworking member at the end of this column each month.
This month’s recipient of the Presidential Spotlight goes to: Hank Clever, MD, FAAD
His dedication and acts of charity deserve our admiration and certainly the Presidential Spotlight!
