Administrative burden by specialty
Facts at your Fingertips
By Emily Margosian, Assistant Editor, November 1, 2023
There are 168 hours in a week. How many of them are physicians spending on paperwork?
According to Medscape’s 2023 “Physician Compensation Report,” on average, physicians work 50 hours per week, 15.5 of which are spent exclusively on paperwork and administration. Of those, nine hours are spent on EHR documentation alone. Of the specialties surveyed, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians spent the most time on paperwork per week, while anesthesiologists spent the least.
