Dermatologist workforce mobility

Facts at your Fingertips

By Emily Margosian, Assistant Editor, April 1, 2025

How often do dermatologists separate from their practices? A recent JAMA Dermatology study sought to answer this question and identify characteristics associated with practice separation (doi:10.1001/jamadermatol.2021.5862). The cross-sectional study collected data from archived versions of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Physician Compare Database (2014-2020) for physicians reporting their primary specialty as dermatology.

According to the study’s findings, on average, 15.4% of dermatologists separate from their practice each year. Overall, a total of 51.3% of positions in 2014 were separated by 2020.

The study also found practice separation more commonly occurring in medium- and large-sized practice groups and among early- and late-career dermatologists (1-9 years since training and ≥25 years since training, respectively).
