Leadership competencies
The Academy considers the following competencies important to the success of its governance structure. Residents, members, committee chairpersons, and directors alike should strive for excellence in these general areas. Progressive growth is encouraged with ongoing service to the Academy and at successive levels of seniority.
Members interested in participating in the Academy’s committees and governance structure are encouraged to review the Governance Handbook (PDF), which includes parliamentary procedure, and the Academy's vision, mission, and strategic plan. Chairs and deputy chairs can use the following competencies as a guide in mentoring young physicians and residents. Opportunities to gain experience in these competencies are presented below:
Basic Governance Competencies
1. Fiduciary responsibilities
Duty of care, loyalty and obedience
Confidentiality
Protecting intellectual property

Advanced Governance Competencies
1. Communicating to Lead and Influence
Such as:
Active and empathic listening; understanding non-verbal cues
Appropriate and effective use of social media
Advocating with policymakers
2. Interpersonal and Team Leadership
Such as:
Building an inclusive culture, collaboration with others, and managing teams
Conflict resolution
Running effective meetings
Influencing with and without authority
3. Resource Stewardship
Such as:
Strategic planning
Building and maintaining a resilient workforce
Developing value-based propositions and performing financial analyses in practice and in organizations
Development and fundraising
Understanding quality measures, metrics and medical analytics in healthcare and finance
Leadership pipeline and succession planning
Talent management: choosing and developing the right people
4. Self-Awareness and Personal Effectiveness
Such as:
Acting with integrity: using ethical considerations to guide decisions and actions
Emotional Intelligence: understanding and managing one's own emotions and understanding the emotions of others
Understanding compromise
5. Leading Across Boundaries
Such as:
Managing organizational politics
Big picture thinking and cultivating vision
Dedicated development of intersociety relationships/links to promote unification of specialty (i.e., state society relationships, grassroots)
