AAD and OM1 collaboration
Together, advancing medical research and improving outcomes with the largest dermatology network in the U.S.

From evidence to insights
Our collaboration connects aggregate, de-identified data from the AAD’s DataDerm Clinical Data Registry with the OM1 Real-World Data Cloud and artificial intelligence/predictive medicine abilities. Our unparalleled network is rich with longitudinal clinical data ready for addressing dermatology’s most urgent questions.

FAQs for members about the collaboration
Q: Why are we collaborating with OM1?
A: In alignment with your Academy’s mission, we are working with OM1 to enhance our analytic capabilities so that the data from millions of patient encounters within DataDerm can be applied for the greatest patient benefit. The collaboration will facilitate an acceleration of highly reliable, complex data analyses for members, AADA advocacy efforts, researchers, and industry partners to improve dermatologic care.
Q: What differences will I see in my DataDerm experience?
A: DataDerm participants will experience no disruptions or changes in their work with DataDerm. While OM1 will work closely with FIGmd, FIGmd remains our registry platform vendor. This collaboration will build upon the existing DataDerm experience.
Q: Who will have access to DataDerm data through this collaboration?
A: DataDerm participants will continue to have access to their own data and aggregate benchmarks. DataDerm staff and the DataDerm Governance Work Group will continue to assess and prioritize research requests from individual members and AAD committees, councils, or task forces (CCTFs). In addition, OM1 will have the ability to combine de-identified, aggregate data from DataDerm with other databases to conduct internal analyses to answer questions from third party researchers.
Q: How will the data be used? Will any of my or my patients’ personal data be sold?
A: This collaboration with OM1 will allow AAD to conduct high-level aggregate analyses to support data-driven decision-making across our various strategic priorities such as research and advocacy. Any analysis commissioned by third parties will be developed using only aggregate, de-identified data. Researchers may submit inquiries and OM1 will combine analysis of the aggregate data from DataDerm — in addition to any other databases in their platform that are relevant to the question at hand — to generate a report back to the original researcher. Researchers will never have access to any personal data about patients or the dermatologists who provided their care.
Q: Will the government or private payers have access to this data?
A: There are no approved uses of the data for government or private payers. If a request were made for a research purpose by a payer, it would have to be reviewed and specifically approved by AAD. That decision would be made in the context of whether such a request would advance our advocacy efforts. Furthermore, AAD would consider the merit of the research as well as the potential impact on the field of dermatology before approving such a request.
Q: How can Academy membership use the data?
A: DataDerm participants and AAD CCTFs can contact DataDerm staff to discuss any research queries. Our staff will advise on the best path forward to complete the request. Please contact the DataDerm team.
Q: Who owns the data in DataDerm?
A: Any practice submitting data to DataDerm owns their practice and patient data. Consistent with other highly regarded clinical registries, AAD owns aggregate data, data dictionaries, and algorithms which are developed and maintained by DataDerm.
Q: Are you profiting from the use of the data?
A: Under the current arrangement, AAD will not derive a profit from this collaboration with OM1. However, the arrangement will assist AAD in covering our substantial investment in DataDerm. Resources from the AAD-OM1 collaboration will partially offset the ongoing costs to support DataDerm while allowing AAD to continue to offer DataDerm as a member benefit and to grow the offerings associated with a clinical data registry.
