Educating the public – Summer meeting coverage

AAD Summer Meeting and dermatologists’ summer skin care tips make the news
So far, a total of 38 news stories covering the 2021 AAD Summer Meeting and new dermatologic research impacting patient treatment and care made headlines that have been seen more than 41 million times.
To help members gain confidence in speaking about the specialty with the media to educate the public about skin, hair, and nail conditions, we host training sessions for AAD members who have expressed interest in promoting the specialty to the media; we recently held one at the Summer Meeting. During the training, participants engage in mock interviews to learn interview tips and techniques and explore AAD key messages on dermatologic topics and other areas that help increase credibility and raise the profile of their practices. We will host our next media training at the 2022 Annual Meeting in Boston.
In addition to our Summer Meeting media relations efforts, the Academy coordinated interviews with top-tier media outlets to leverage members’ expertise on common summer skin care topics that appeared in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, and Washington Post, among others.
Beyond these high-profile media articles, from April through August the Academy secured more than 2,300 news stories that were seen more than 7 billion times and positioned dermatologists as skin, hair, and nail experts.
