Educating the public — New content positions dermatologists as the experts

Updated content on fading dark spots on skin of color attracts new readers
The AAD’s public website content helps tens of millions of potential dermatology patients learn more about their conditions — more than 30 million so far in 2021. In the last issue, we highlighted the most popular content of the year so far.
We don’t rest on our laurels, though — content is periodically reviewed and updated, and new content is introduced all the time. Recently, as part of an ongoing effort to ensure that our public content reaches patients with all skin types, we updated our page about treating dark spots on skin of color. You know that patients who try to treat these spots themselves can do serious harm; this content points them toward the safest options and directs them to see a board-certified dermatologist if those options don’t work. In just three months after debuting, the page had been viewed almost 50,000 times.
This page of public content, like every page, was reviewed by members of the AAD’s Public Education Committee and Web Content Workgroup to ensure that it features the most up-to-date recommendations.
