The Academy recently learned with sorrow of the passing of the following members of the dermatologic community.
JOHN L. AELING, MD, of Orlando, Florida, Oct. 26, 2018, at age 82. Trained at National Capital Area Consortium Dermatology Residency Program.
HERMAN D. ALSTON, MD, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, April 19, 2019, at age 91. Trained in dermatology at University of Oklahoma and practiced in Jonesboro. Was an avid reader and loved woodworking.
WILLIAM J. GORHAM, MD, of Stockton, California, May 6, 2018, at age 87. Trained at Stanford. Practiced in Stockton for 32 years before retiring, but continued service on the local tumor board.
DON R. HOLDAWAY, MD, of Logan, Utah, April 18, 2019, at age 76, the day before his birthday. Trained at Mayo Clinic and practiced in Logan for 32 years. Had eight children, 16 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren! Enjoyed boating, backpacking, fishing and tying flies, golf, and gardening.
ROBERT JACKSON, MD, of Ottawa, Ontario, March 24, 2019, at age 93. Trained in dermatology in Canada but no specifics found. Prof. Emeritus of Medicine in Division of Dermatology at University of Ottawa. Past President of Canadian Dermatology Association and Dep. Dir. of Education of National Program of Dermatology; served in positions for the AAD. Wrote seminal work on the appearance of skin diseases, Morphological Diagnosis of Skin Disease. Expert on life of Sir Jonathan Hutchinson. Ran a dermatology clinic on Baffin Island for the Inuit. Expert on deathbed photography, the Chinese Foot Binding Syndrome, medical aspects of the Civil War and Canadian prisoners of war in Hong Kong. Accomplished in needlepoint and devoted woodlot operator that will leave healthy forests around Ottawa.
EDWARD S. LERCHIN, MD, of Shelby Township, Michigan, June 28, 2018, at age 74. Trained in dermatology at Wine State University and practiced for several years in Michigan. No obituary found.
ANDREW L. MESSENGER, MD, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, March 26, 2019, at age 97. Trained in dermatology at University of Pennsylvania after practicing Family Practice for a few years. Maintained his dermatology practice in and around Lansing, Michigan, until age 83, then still kept up with the literature. Avid outdoorsman.
DONALD GLENN MOYER, MD, of Eugene, Oregon, Sept. 10, 2018, at age 88. Trained in dermatology at Letterman Army Medical Center. Online obituary not retrievable.
CHARLES ROMAN PAULY, MD, of Fishersville, Virginia, April 13, 2019, at age 71. Trained in dermatology at University of Michigan. Founded Blue Ridge Dermatology in Waynesboro, Virginia. Very active in his community: Founded Blue Ridge Soccer Association and brought the sport to local schools; performed many acts of philanthropy for the community; enjoyed many outdoors activities including golf, tennis, biking, and skiing.
GARY GENE RAMELLI, MD, of Long Beach, California, Feb. 8, 2018, at age 81. Trained in dermatology at (maybe) Letterman Army Medical Center. Practiced dermatology and dermatopathology in Long Beach and Huntington Beach for more than 50 years.
THOMAS MICHAEL RYAN, MD, of Spokane Valley, Washington, Aug. 4, 2018, at age 79. Trained in dermatology at Mayo Clinic. Practiced more than 40 years in Spokane Valley. Served in leadership roles in Washington state medical societies and at the Mayo Clinic. Was an accomplished clay shooter and worked with youth shooters. Enjoyed riding motorcycles with family and fly fishing.
HENRY SCHROEDER JR., MD, of Cold Spring, New York, Feb. 11, 2018, at age 85. Discovered dermatology while in the Army at Ft. Hood because all difficult dermatology cases were sent to him. Trained in dermatology at NYU. Practiced for many years in Poughkeepsie and then Fishkill, New York.
DANIEL F. SHANAHAN, MD, of Phoenix, March 1, 2019, at age 89. Trained in dermatology at University of Minnesota. Practiced in Phoenix for 59 years!
JOSEPH EUGENE VELASCO, MD, of Tomball, Texas, Feb. 20, 2019, at age 88. Trained in dermatology at University of Miami. No online obituary found. Apparently practiced in Miami Beach after which he lived in Tomball, Texas.
RICHARD WALLRICH, MD, of Santa Rosa, California, Oct. 9, 2018, at age 88. Trained in dermatology at National Capital Area Consortium Derm Residency Program (Walter Reed). Practiced in Santa Rosa for more than 40 years. Enjoyed tennis and golf and, especially, boating and fishing at Lake Tahoe.
HADLEY RASCH YOUNG, MD, of Duluth, Minnesota, Feb. 16, 2018, at age 88. Trained in dermatology at University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic and practiced in Duluth. Enjoyed downhill ski instruction and ballroom dancing.
