AAD membership data reveal key specialty shifts

Facts at your fingertips

By Emily Margosian, assistant editor, July 1, 2020

Much has changed over the past five years, and dermatology is no exception. AAD membership data, which represents approximately 92% of all board-certified dermatologists, helps lend some insight into which way the specially is currently trending. Regarding gender distribution, the number of incoming female dermatologists continues to exceed their male counterparts. Data also shows gender potentially plays a role in preferred practice setting, with female dermatologists more likely to work in academic practice compared to male dermatologists, who are more prevalent in solo practice.

Among all AAD members, group and academic practice have continued to grow, while solo practice has diminished. While data show young physicians are largely employed in group or academic practice settings, overall, group practice remains the dominant practice setting, employing a significant percentage of all age groups, including late-career dermatologists.
