The Academy recently learned with sorrow of the passing of the following members of the dermatologic community.
ALGIE C. BROWN, MD, of Roswell, Georgia, May 14, 2018, at age 82. Trained in dermatology at Johns Hopkins followed by a fellowship in dermatopathology at Mayo Clinic. Practiced for 32 years beginning at Emory in Atlanta where he founded first AAD-accredited dermatopathology training program. Later established a private practice with dermatopathology lab. Granted four patents related to gait analysis and was a consultant to U.S. Dept. of Justice and the FBI based on research in forensic medicine/pathology. Awarded The Order of the Palmetto by South Carolina, highest civilian honor granted by the governor. Loved tennis, golf, and, later, oil painting creating, over 150 oil paintings of depression-era scenes in the south.
LANI E. CLARK, MD, of Los Alamitos, California, Oct. 4, 2019, at age 61. Trained in dermatiology at Univ. of Colorado and in Mohs surgery at Univ. of Louisville. Former faculty member at Rush Univ. Med. Center in Chicago, teaching dermatologic surgery. Practiced in Los Alamitos. Enjoyed tennis, sailing, and skiing. Later returned to a lifelong passion for painting and creative art.
BASIL D. CUTLIP, JR., of Olney, Maryland, April 21, 2019, at age 82. Trained in dermatology at Nat. Cap Area Consortium. No other information found.
RICHARD JAY FEINSTEIN, MD, of Coral Gables, Florida, Aug. 19, 2019, at age 77. Trained in dermatology at Univ. of Miami. Prior to his residency served in the U.S. Public Health Indian Services in Chinle, Arizona, and later wrote a novel of his experiences there titled Evrey Goodman. Served as clinical professor of dermatology at Miami for 29 years while growing his 40-year practice in Coconut Grove, Florida. An accomplished writer who published often in the Miami Herald on medicine. Appointed to Florida Board of Medical Examiners. Loved music, art, traveling, the gym, and swimming.
DUDLEY W. GOETZ, DO, of Southlake, Texas, July 15, 2019, at age 76. No record found of dermatology training after osteopathy school in Philadelphia. Practiced in Arlington, Texas for over 40 years. Loved music and rescuing injured animals.
JAMES M. KRIVO, MD, of Bridgeton, Maine, June 30, 2013, at age 72. Dermatologic training at NY Medical College/Metropolitan Hospital. Practice three locations on Long Island, New York.
ERNEST LORENC, MD, of Springfield, Missouri, Nov. 20, 2019, at age 90. Trained in dermatology at Mayo Clinic. Attended Czech School to learn his family’s native language. Awarded first research award by O’Leary Society at Mayo. Practiced in Springfield for 35 years. Was last surviving member of the group who founded the Missouri Dermatological Association and was its first president. Also was a dermatology consultant to U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners and was feted as their longest continuous consultant of 35 years. Enjoyed using his pilot’s license, fishing, bee keeping, and, later in life, took up woodturning at which he won several awards and had pieces in seven countries.
CHRISTINA MARINO, MD, MPH, of Spokane, Washington, March 12, 2019, at age 66. Trained in dermatology at UCSF. After a short time in private practice in Kentucky, she moved to Washington, D.C., and earned a certification in French cooking at L’Academie de Cuisine followed by a MPH from George Washington University, then joining the NCI as a research fellow. After another move to Seattle, she became an epidemiologist for State of Washington and, ultimately, returned to dermatology private practice in Spokane. Overcame major medical issues of juvenile RA, lymphoma via a stem cell transplant, and breast cancer. Co-authored The Cancer Survivor Cookbook and completed a master gardener program. Finally, was a talented artist using pen and ink, papier maché, and other media, crafting cards, gifts, and edible animal confections!
JOSEPH MASESSA, MD, of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, Nov. 1, 2019, at age 59. Trained in dermatology at Cook County Hospital. Had several practices in both north and south New Jersey as well as South Carolina and Florida. Well-known air show pilot who, tragically, died in a twin propeller engine plane crash in Stuart, Florida preparing for an air show. Had restored the Vietnam-era plane and had names of all MIA military personnel from that era engraved on the plane.
JOSEPH S. MCGUIRE, MD, of Stanford, California, Oct. 4, 2019, at age 88. Trained in dermatology at Yale. Became professor of pediatric dermatology at Yale doing research in blistering diseases before moving to Stanford as professor of dermatology. Former president of S.I.D. Was an artist and poet, and enjoyed sailing, reading, language, and the constant pursuit of knowledge. Colleague Eugene Bauer, MD, former chair of dermatology and dean at Stanford Medical School described him as “a wonderfully benign iconoclast…always driven to truth and compassion for those whom he encountered.”
EVANGELOS (ANGELO) G. POULOS, MD, of Miami Lakes, Florida, Mar. 18, 2019, at age 67. Trained in anatomic and clinical pathology at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami (not in dermatology per se). Practiced pathology and dermatopathology in South Florida for over 40 years. Avid vocalist and numismatist.
VADE G. RHOADES, MD, of Winston Salem, North Carolina, Oct. 26, 2019, at age 83. Trained in dermatology at Duke. Practiced in Winston Salem for 47 years. Enjoyed couples’ bridge and attending sporting events.
E. WILLIAM ROSENBERG, MD, of Memphis, July 21, 2018, at age 88. Dermatology training at Harvard. First worked at Univ. of Florida, then moved to Memphis as professor of dermatology and, later, chairman of dermatology at Univ. of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis. In over 50 years there, helped train more than 100 residents. Awarded the AAD Gold Medal Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1998. Researched microorganisms and psoriasis, contact sensitization for alopecia areata, uses of gentian violet in dermatology, and vitamin D and dermatology. Avid bridge player and jogger. Loved journal club and reading journals outside of dermatology. Current Chair at UTHSC, Tejesh Patel, MD, called Dr. Rosenberg “an exceptional researcher, outstanding educator, inspirational leader, and a dedicated public servant.”
JAMES PATRICK ROTCHFORD, MD, of Arlington, Virginia, Oct. 9, 2019, at age 91. Trained in dermatology at NYU. Prior to dermatology residency and after Air Force service, joined his father in general practice in Spokane, Washington. After residency, practiced in Arlington for 29 years with his wife as his nurse.
PAVILS VASARINSH, MD, of Toronto, Ontario, June 21, 2019, at age 91. Certified by Royal College in Dermatology. No other information available. However, I quote my former dermatology co-resident, Jim Rasmussen’s review of Dr. Vasarinsh’s 1982 book, Clinical Dermatology: Diagnosis and therapy of common skin diseases, “Dr. Vasarinsh has been an interested, enthusiastic teacher of dermatology for the past 15 years…obviously reflects the practitioner’s desire for useful treatment, the dedicated teacher’s love of the educational process, and the English-Canadian tradition of crisp, clear writing. I would wholeheartedly recommend it as the volume to be used for students who do not intend to become dermatologists, as well as family practitioners and internists.”
