Your Dermatologist Knows
See how well it works

You’re the experts. We’re proving it to the public.
Since its launch in October of 2022, the Academy’s Your Dermatologist Knows consumer positioning strategy has successfully moved the needle regarding public perception of dermatologists, especially when compared to non-physician clinicians. A survey conducted in the summer of 2024 reflects this positive impact, the results of which are detailed below.
Derms vs. PAs: The gap is clear
I believe that ____________:
As you can see, when compared to physician assistants, dermatologists are overwhelmingly preferred. This can be credited to the Your Dermatologist Knows strategy of positioning board-certified dermatologists as the go-to experts in skin, hair, and nail health.
Derms vs. NPs/PAs: A clear preference
I believe that ________________ are the go-to experts for:
But it’s not just physician assistants. When compared alongside nurse practitioners as well, dermatologists still shine. Thanks to the efforts of Your Dermatologist Knows, board-certified dermatologists are overwhelmingly seen as the only professionals with the experience necessary to treat skin, hair, and nail conditions.
Your Dermatologist Knows social media posts work
Percent surveyed who have seen a dermatologist in the past 3 years
The efforts aren’t just resulting in a more positive public perception. We’re driving more patients to your practices, with survey respondents being 55% more likely to have seen a dermatologist after viewing Your Dermatologist Knows content on social media.
Dermatologists are at top of mind
Who comes to mind first for skin, hair, and nail health?
The results could not be more definitive. Board-certified dermatologists are overwhelmingly thought of first when patients are making skin, hair, and nail health decisions, seven times more frequently than aestheticians and over 30 times more frequently than a primary care physician. Thanks to the efforts of Your Dermatologist Knows, the public knows to partner with an FAAD when making skin, hair, and nail health care decisions for themselves and their families.
Your Dermatologist Knows shows measurable growth
I choose a dermatologist over another professional because dermatologists…
The Your Dermatologist Knows idea was conceived to address member concerns about the Academy’s efforts to position them with the public, and the strategy was developed after an initial survey conducted prior to launch. The recent survey in 2024 makes it abundantly clear that the efforts are paying off. There has been a clear, stark increase in perception of board-certified dermatologists in the two years since the launch of Your Dermatologist Knows.
There is no reason to believe this trend will not continue, but that does not mean the Academy will become complacent. In fact, the opposite is true, because while the numbers are promising, there is still room for improvement. The Academy’s strategy will continue to evolve and expand with the ultimate goal of increasing the positive gains we’ve achieved in the two years since launch.
Note: The survey discussed on this page was administered to U.S. women aged 25 – 35, the primary target audience of Your Dermatologist Knows strategy. You can read more about why that demographic was selected on the FAQ page.
