Time to break up with your old break room

Physician and staff burnout are on the rise, giving more reason to think about the non-clinical, non-administrative space of the practice — the staff lounge otherwise known as the break room. This space can often go neglected because it may not be valued the same way as the other areas of the office, where important patient care work takes place. But that is a short-sighted view of how much this space can contribute to your practice’s overall success.

Connections, collaboration, revitalization, and relaxation are words that should come to mind when designing this space. It’s not just a place to store, heat, and eat your lunch. If you design your staff lounge right, it can be a space to:

When it comes to designing this space, keep this in mind:

  • Location: This space should be away from the rest of the hustle and bustle of the practice. If possible, a direct outside staff entrance should be prioritized, and a timeclock should be positioned near the entrance for staff to clock in and out.

  • Size and use: Ensure the space can seat staff comfortably without crowding each other.

  • Furniture: Select furniture that is comfortable, easy to clean, and easy to move around for groups or individual seating

  • Appliances: A refrigerator, two microwaves, coffee machine, and dishwasher are musts. Consider other appliances your staff may value. Is an espresso machine in the budget?

  • Space and storage: Ensure there is space for personal items to be locked up, ample counter space, and durable storage units with varying size drawers and cabinets to store shared supplies.

  • Aesthetics: Choose cool or natural tone paint colors, add modest wall art, and place live green plants to create calm.

  • Perks: Install plenty of outlets for charging phones and consider stocking the room with free beverages and light refreshments for staff to enjoy.

  • Reminders: Put up bulletin boards to share important announcements, relevant staff news, and reminders to keep this space clean.

So it’s time to “break up” with that outdated break room. Instead, give your staff the space they deserve.
