Asked and Answered
November 1, 2019
We’ve heard your concerns about the Academy’s environmental impact at its meetings and have taken a number of steps to make our meetings more eco-friendly, including:
Eliminating plastic waste by:
Converting plastic name badges to paper
Eliminating plastic bags and ‘swag’ previously distributed at registration
Maximizing usage of water coolers and water fountains at convention facilities to reduce plastic water bottle waste
Requesting china and silverware at all meal functions, or that which is recycled/recyclable or biodegradable
Eliminating paper waste by:
Converting onsite program books to digital
Eliminating pads of paper at registration (participants are encouraged to take notes via the AAD Meeting app)
Converting 98% of session handouts to digital, along with all paper/poster abstract presentations
Reducing convention center environmental impact by:
Hosting the majority of AAD meetings at LEED-certified convention centers
Reducing the number of ‘hardscapes’ produced at AAD meetings to lighter, reusable fabrics
Utilizing reusable/recyclable carpet in the convention center and exhibit halls
Maximizing the use of digital signage in convention centers and hotels
Ensuring that leftover food is delivered to the homeless/needy as policy permits with local and facility laws
Reducing the number of shuttle routes and buses from hotels in close proximity to the convention center
Sourcing local vegetables from convention center and hotel gardens when available
Reducing lighting and HVAC to under 50% during move-in and move-out of convention centers
Utilizing convention facilities with a recycling program
